1.0 Overview
1.1 The StockNetwork search engine is designed to allow users to search our expansive database of news by using individual or multiple keywords as criteria. Users can then sort their results according to parameters that they have pre-determined to optimize the presentation of the desired information. The search engine allows you to pinpoint desired SEDAR or EDGAR filings without the hassle of tirelessly combing through irrelevant material.
1.2 StockNetwork has archived precisely two years of publicly disseminated news in its database. This unprecedented access to archived content allows a user to search over 1 million news pieces and press releases by any desired permutation of descriptors.
1.3 Unlike any other financial news focused database the StockNetwork search engine aims to offer users accurate results efficiently and quickly to assist people undertaking investment research today.
Instructions
2.0 Accessing the Basic Search
2.1 The StockNetwork Search Engines are available for deployment from any page on the site and are always located in the upper right hand corner of the page.
2.2 Like most search facilities StockNetwork has designed an advanced search to assist users with more focused queries relating specifically to: companies, news, people and other StockNetwork investors. Instructions on how to navigate the advanced search are available below in section 5.1.
2.3 You can begin a search by entering your search term(s) separated by a space in the box provided and then by clicking on the microscope to engage/activate the search.
2.4 Alternatively a user may also choose to click on the grey "Search Engine" tab located in the toolbar across the top of all StockNetwork pages to link through to the search engine page. Once the Search Engine page appears the user must enter their desired search terms into the box provided separated by a space. To activate the search click the microscope symbol to engage the search engine.
3.0 I have entered my keywords into the Search Engine - now what?
3.1 You have now entered your queried keywords and engaged the search by clicking the microscope. The site will then deliver a wealth of generalized results.
3.2 For example: If you have searched a company stock ticker, an individual person, a mining region or a Company name; a link to that company's StockNetwork profile will be offered in the Search Results field.
3.3 Or if you have searched the name "John Smith" a list of companies will appear in the results field where the name "John Smith" appears in a StockNetwork profile [perhaps as a Director or Officer of the Company; or perhaps in one of the Company's news releases].
4.0 Basic Search Engine result Filters - How do I use them and what are they for?
4.1 Once search criteria has been entered into the search box the site will link you to the Search Engine results page. You will notice several functionality keys available to you on the left hand side of the screen. These functions are to be used to refine your search results once they have been presented.
4.2 You can refine the search results by clicking on any of the following buttons:
View All Results: By applying this refinement to your search results the system will display all news articles and all related companies to the search query entered.
View News: If you have entered a search term(s) into the query box and wish to refine the results by News articles disseminated and stored in the StockNetwork servers this button will do so.
View Companies: If you have entered a search term(s) into the query box and wish to refine the results by Company this button will refine the results accordingly.
Filter by Investment Preferences: When you initially registered for a profile page on the site you were asked to indicate your industries of interest, sub-industries of interest, and preferred stock exchanges. If your search terms fall within those preferred investment criteria preferences one can filter the results (news and companies) per these preferences once the initial results have been delivered.
Reset Filters: Once general search results have been rendered you can reset the search filters [as it relates to having engaged the Filter by Investment Preferences option] and the results displayed for your query will be all-encompassing across every industry, sub-industry and stock exchange to reflect a broader set of results.
Refine by: Industry, Sub-Industry and Exchange: allows you to filter search results by each of these specific criteria.
5.0 Advanced Search
Overview
5.1 The Advanced Search was designed to allow you to refine the focus of your query beyond a simple search. In some cases the nature of a query may be so broad that it is necessary to create boundaries to produce the optimal desired results. Being able to focus your search from the outset will better assist the search engine in providing accurate and desired results.
Instructions
5.2 The first step you must take is to determine what you are looking for and which of the four options would best suit your query. At the center of the top of the page you will be asked to identify which option would best suit your query: by key phrase/term, by company information, by corporate headquarters, by exchange or by industry.
5.3 Companies: If you wish to search for a type of company according to your pre-determined parameters you will select the "Companies" option. The purpose of this search is to display groupings of companies that fall within the desired criteria. In each search you perform you can be as vague or as precise as you wish when entering the parameters and you can use all of the various options available to you to achieve the desired result.
EXAMPLE
You are searching for TSX and TSX.V gold companies working in Timmins that have an address on Bay Street in Toronto. You would then:
- Input the term "Timmins" in the Key Term/Phrase field.
- Input "gold" in the Focus field under Company Information.
- Check off "TSX" and "TSV-V" boxes under Exchanges.
- Input "Bay St" in the Address field.
At the bottom right of the page you would press the "Search" button and a list of companies fitting these criteria would appear.
5.4 News: If you wish to see a list of news releases pertaining to a certain criteria you will select "News" from the drop down menu at the top of the page. The purpose of this search is to display relevant news releases and articles that fall within your desired criteria.
EXAMPLE
You are searching for news released by Exchange Traded Funds (ETF's) whose core assets are focused on the energy sector and listed on the NYSE. You would then:
- Input "ETF" in the Key Term/Phrase field.
- Check off "Energy" box under Industries.
- Check off "NYSE" box under Exchanges.
At the bottom right of the page you would press the "Search" button and a list of press releases fitting these criteria would appear.
5.5 People: If you are searching for a particular person's name that appears in news releases and articles you will select "People" from the drop down menu at the top of the page. The purpose of this search is to display relevant news releases and articles that include the name of the individual you have entered.
EXAMPLE
You are searching for news releases containing the name "Steve Jobs". You would then:
- Input "Steve" and "Jobs" into the fields under Key Personnel Information.
- Check off any relevant Industry boxes if desired.
- Check off any relevant Exchange boxes if desired.
At the bottom right of the page you would press the "Search" button and a list news releases including the name "Steve Jobs" will appear.
5.6 Investors: If you are searching for a fellow Investor in the StockNetwork system you will select "Investor" from the drop down menu at the top of the page. There are multiple uses for this search:
- Identifying StockNetwork users with similar interests to your own.
- Identifying users from various regions to track their interests and portfolio performance.
- To see out specific users on the system by nickname or investor number.
EXAMPLE
You are searching for users who are interested in the North American bond market. You would then:
- Check "Banking" and "Financial Services" boxes under Industries.
- Check off any relevant Exchange boxes if desired.
The results rendered will display a user's location and portfolio return percentage based upon the companies they own and have entered into their profile. You can click on the investor name and be linked to a page that displays that individual's: basic information (age, location), key sector interests, the companies and the percentage they make up in his/her holdings, the portfolio return statistics, a list of the companies in their StockNetwork Watchlist as well as their opinions and comments on articles or releases they have rated in the past.
6.0 Troubleshooting
What if my search returns NO results at all?
There will from time to time be instances where one of your search queries may not deliver results. This may occur for many reasons but is most likely not because the result is unavailable - it will occur only because of the manner in which you are conducting your search.
EXAMPLE 1
When searching for the gold exploration company "Nebu Resources" and you have received no results consider re-trying the search by entering the company's full name "Nebu Resources Inc." or by searching the company's stock symbol "NBU:CA". Attempt your search by entering a variation of the term(s) you have entered.
EXAMPLE 2
If you are searching the following terms in the basic search: "information technology, TSX, radio technology, Peter Brown" and you are experiencing trouble producing accurate results there are various ways one can refine their search.
- Remove the Stock Exchange [TSX] from the search query box and use the Stock Exchange refining key to focus the results to TSX listed companies once the initial data has been generated.
- Consider using fewer variables in your search, ie.: "Peter Brown, radio technology".
- Try using the Advanced Search by searching "Peter Brown" using the "People" option.
Chances are by offering more information into the search query one will reap more relevant results. Alternatively by searching fewer more focused terms into the basic search engine and then refining results one might achieve better results.
Can I look up stock symbols on StockNetwork?
Yes. If you know the Company is called "Frank's Widget Corp." enter the name - or a variation of, ie. "Frank's"- into the search engine and the result will produce a link to Frank's Widgets Corp. StockNetwork page. This link will be accompanied by notification of the exchange on which Frank's is listed and the trading symbol.
Can I search the content of financial reports?
No. BUT you are able to gather the documents you wish to see on one screen so as to avoid tirelessly sorting through SEDAR or EDGAR for the desired reports.
EXAMPLE
Investor wishes to see all of Barrick Gold Corp.'s quarterly reports for the period January 2005 - January 2009.
- Enter Barrick Gold into the StockNetwork search engine.
- Click on the link to Barrick's StockNetwork page.
- Click on the "Trading/Finance" icon in the Barrick company profile.
- Scroll down the page to section headed: "Disseminated Information"
- Click on the "Filings" tab.
- Complete the information required in the fields: "Document Type", "Industry Group", "Sort Results By", "Start Date" and "End Date"
- Click the "View Filings" button.
